During a utility power outage, an automatic whole home generator provides numerous advantages over a portable generator:
• With an automatic backup generator properly installed outside, your home is protected from deadly carbon monoxide poisoning which is a much greater risk with portable generators.
• Running on the home’s natural gas or propane fuel supply is cheaper than gasoline. Natural gas also does not need to be refilled.
• They start automatically within seconds of a power outage and eliminate the need to haul a portable generator outside or run extension cords throughout your home.
• They provide protection 24/7, whether you’re home or away. They turn themselves off when utility power returns so there is no need to monitor the unit during an outage.

To power some of your home, a 10KW generator would work. To power your entire home, a 22 to 26 KW whole home generator would be needed. According to the United States Energy Information Administration, natural gas produced over 1.8 trillion kWh of energy in 2023. Contact Island Electric for help deciding which generator is best for your home and family's needs!

An automatic whole home generator is a backup electrical system that operates whether you are home or away. Within seconds of an outage, it automatically supplies power directly to your home's electrical circuit breaker box. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and waits for the next outage. It operates on natural gas or liquid propane and sits outside like a central air conditioning unit.
One of the most common reasons is called a Stab Lock plug, a poor but legal design used to quickly and inexpensively wire outlets found in most track housing and older homes. The problem occurs when the two thin pieces of sheet metal that hold the wire weaken from heat and cause a loose connection then will melt or catch fire.
A tripped GFCI outlet is another common occurrence. When we find the kitchen, bathroom, garage, or outside outlets not working, we look for the tripped or failed GFCI outlet.
Finally, a tripped or bad breaker can cause outlets to malfunction. When you need help diagnosing outlet issues, contact the expert electricians and generator installers at Island Electric!
First, we look at the bulbs themselves. Most inexpensive LED bulbs are prone to overheating and will start to flicker, dim, or flash. If there are no issues with the bulb, we look at the connection to the power company. Poor connection with the power company at the transformer before the meter will cause an interrupted energy flow. Finally, a loose connection at the switch or the switch itself could be the culprit. For help with electrical issues, circuit breakers, or a whole home generator, contact the team at Island Electric!
